Has anyone used one of those kitchen remodeling places that advertice a complete remodel for $3995-4995?

The ads say that they include solid oak cabinets and granite countertops (with certain specifications as to cabinet size and linear feet of counter), as well as demolition and installation. (This is in Southern California, San Gabriel Valley area.) Also interested in the $2995 bathroom remodel ads if you have experience with those.

I just bought my first little 2/1 starter condo. The place is pretty nice and spacious for 868 SqFt. Its in a great neighborhood. The living room is nice and the bathroom is descen but the kitchen is like a cave from hell. The kitchen is a boxed in 10x10 slum, pretty much the same as it was the day they completed it in 1987. Orange/yellow linoleum, old dark cabinets, beat up appliances and one dim light in the center.

I have the money to put into remodeling the kitchen to be quite nice. New lighting, maple cabinets, granite countertops, stone floors and stainless steel appliances. Here in NorCal kitchens get the money on a resell. The dilemma is, do I want to sink that kind of money and effort into a place that will scare away "starter home buyers" or do I want to go for it and appeal to the higher end bachelor/bachelorette? Any suggestions?

I do plan on living in it for about 5 years to build some nice equity. I would like to live with the nicer kitchen, but I would be content with a less extravagant kitchen that would cost thousands less.Good answers so far...I was thinking about the fact that the kitchens in the other unit's for sale in the complex are updated, somewhat, but are still 10 years old and not impressive. That’s why I picked mine, besides the best location in the complex; it had the oldest kitchen with the lowest asking price.

I wasn't sure if I wanted to go "all out” on the remodel or hold back and just do a "nice" remodel. I am definitely doing more than just some painting on cabinets and a tile backsplash.

If you're thinking about improving your kitchen, you have a lot of choices to do that. Slate flooring is also a popular choice. Durability and looks are the most noticed where it is concerned. That's why so many people like it. Slate can be pricey when it's used for flooring.  You need to know what the pros and cons are so you don't wind up with something you don't like or something which doesn't look or feel anything like what you expected. Slate weighs a lot, so you'll need to know that your floor can handle the weight. If your floor is concrete that's fine, but if you have other flooring material, be sure to consider that.

Landscaping slate is another common use for this. It's often used outdoors where it seems to hold up well. A lot of times it's used for walkways and patios, and you can also put it in rock gardens and around trees and plants for decoration. Generally landscape slate is not as pricey because it allows for more imperfections without being a problem. You can break slate up and put it in your gardens, but it's more common to use it the way you would use flagstones in patios and paths. It's completely your choice on that.

How durable slate is is a main reason why it's so often used for things. How it looks is another reason for its popularity. No matter what you decide don't forget ahead without research. It'll help you enjoy your slate well into the future.

I am remodeling my kitchen and not sure what kinds of fixtures are NOT allowed to be installed -- recessed IC, non IC. etc...Thanks

My husband and I are moving into our first house and there are some things I'd like to do. Eventually I'd like to remodel the entire kitchen, but right now, all I want to do is take off the current wallpaper (on drywall), and repaint. The kitchen has a sliding glass door that opens to our deck, so there will be quite a bit of light. What colors would you recommend? Keep in mind I'd eventually like to have granite counter tops (darker color, maybe black), and tile floors. I'm not into really bold colors, but right now the only thing I can think of was a pale yellow.... but I don't know how that would work with future work, AND the kitchen will be connected to a light blue living room. Help! Color coordination is not my thing when it comes to painting.

What % should you expect to pay before kitchen remodeling construction starts?

Also, when is the balance paid? When it's half-way done? At the very end?

I am remodeling kitchen which involves upgrading appliances also. In the contract, I forgot to mention the voltage for Electric Oven.Now,what is reasonable to pay the contractor to upgrade the voltage from 110V to 220V?
